"I'm 65 and I guess that puts me in with the geriatrics. But if there were fifteen months in every year, I'd only be 48. That's the trouble with us. We number everything. Take women, for example. I think they deserve to have more than twelve years between the ages of 28 and 40."
- Thurber, James

What to Look for When Choosing a Retirement Community

Deciding Where to Live

Deciding where to live in retirement is one of the most important decisions people will make. For those considering a move to a retirement community, there are more choices than ever before that cater to a variety of lifestyle and health care needs. These tips can help you make the best possible decision.

1. Check the background of the community: Find out when and how it was established, who owns and operates it, and who manages the company. What is the track record of management? Is it not-for-profit or for-profit? Is it accredited by an independent agency for meeting high standards for services, operations and finances? Ask for financial statements.

2. Consider future health needs: Many places offer an attractive lifestyle but do not provide health care services making another move a possibility down the line. If health care is provided, is it on-site? Be sure to find out what levels of care are provided for any community you are considering.

Virtual Colonoscopy

Virtual colonoscopy (VC) uses x rays and computers to produce two- and three-dimensional images of the colon (large intestine) from the lowest part, the rectum, all the way to the lower end of the small intestine and display them on a screen. The procedure is used to diagnose colon and bowel disease, including polyps, diverticulosis, and cancer. VC can be performed with computed tomography (CT), sometimes called a CAT scan, or with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Federal Whistleblower Protection in Jeopardy

Special Counsel Scott Bloch, appointed by President Bush in 2004, is overseeing the virtual elimination of federal whistleblower rights in the U.S. government. The U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC), the agency that is supposed to protect federal employees who blow the whistle on waste, fraud, and abuse is dismissing hundreds of cases while advancing almost none. According to the Annual Report for 2004 (which was not released until the end of first quarter fiscal year 2006) less than 1.5 percent of whistleblower claims were referred for investigation while more than 1000 reports were closed before they were even opened. Only eight claims were found to be substantiated, and one of those included the theft of a desk, while another included attendance violations. Favorable outcomes have declined 24 percent overall, and this is all in the first year that the new special counsel, Scott Bloch, has been in office.
